Chattanoogans have the opportunity to select a new sculpture for the Hunter Museum of American Art that will be located at the new front entrance of the Chattanooga Zoo thanks to a grant from the Benwood Foundation.
Online voting opened Wednesday on the Hunter Museum Web site. Early voting via paper ballots began at the Zoo and Hunter museum in December. All voting will close Jan. 28.
Members of the Chattanooga community may choose one of the following three potions for the Zoo site
Cougar 1 and Cougar 5 by Gwynn Murrill: if chosen, the artist will apply a
mottled finish to the sculpture to transform them into their relative, the
jaguar. The finished sculpture will reference the Latin American jaguar
currently living in the Chattanooga Zoo.
Into The Calm II by Brad Rude:
features a carousel of animals balanced on the haunches of a cow. If chosen, the
artist will populate the carousel with animals currently found in the zoo.
The Troupe by Bart Walter: features a group of seven chimpanzee figures
representing a member of the chimpanzee social group. These figures could be
placed along two of the raised flower beds in the interior entrance plaza within
the zoo.
The $1.2 million Art in Public Places grant from the Benwood
Foundation will allow the Hunter Museum to acquire at least four outdoor
sculptures. The works will be placed in public areas throughout the city,
including the Chattanooga Zoo, Renaissance Park and Miller Plaza.
Each month, the Hunter will conduct online voting for one of the sculpture sites on its Web site. Paper ballots will also be available at the Hunter Museum. The process will continue throughout the spring.
